It’s a long-standing tradition of mine to listen to baseball and baseball-adjacent music on the day that pitchers and catchers report. So I wanted to know what Giants fans’ favorite baseball songs are.
Good morning, baseball fans!
Today is the day! The San Francisco Giants pitchers and catchers are reporting for duty, which means the long winter is over and baseball activities have officially resumed!
There’s something really sweet about this day every year. A kind of blind faith optimism where your love and longing for baseball makes you forget just how good or not good your team is, the fact that games don’t start for a while yet, and meaningful games don’t start for a while after that.
In keeping with my theme of traditions, today I wanted to talk about baseball music. One of my favorite things to do on this day every year is to play some of my favorite baseball songs.
Personally, John Fogerty’s “Centerfield” is the all-time favorite. If you aren’t searching for tickets and pulling out your glove by the time that song is over, I’m not sure you even like baseball. (I’m kidding, of course.)
Coming in close behind that is the “All American Girls Professional Baseball League Song” which is quite a mouthful, but is essentially the anthem of A League of Their Own.
Also, no list would be complete without “We’re Talkin’ Softball” from The Simpsons episode “Homer At The Bat,” an all-time classic from the show’s golden era.
What are your favorite baseball songs?
