These may not be the most important stories in baseball at the moment but they made me laugh, so you get to laugh too.
Good morning, baseball fans!
One of the hardest things about the off-season is that there isn’t necessarily big news to cover every day. So I thought we’d do a little bit of a San Francisco Giants news round-up.
Now, these aren’t in any way the most important stories in baseball or even Giants baseball. But they were funny. To me, at least. And I’m the one driving this car.
First up, we have this report from Gabe Lehman over at SFGate, which discusses New Era’s 2025 Spring Training merch, which came out Monday.
That wouldn’t ordinarily be noteworthy, but they made just a bit of an error on a trucker hat in the Giants’ merch line. At first glance, all looks fine. And then you realize they’ve decided that the Giants play in the Grapefruit League.
Unfortunately, the hats are no longer available to purchase, which is a shame. It would be a fun item to have in your collection otherwise.
The second headline that I saw that made me laugh actually looks to be AI-generated upon further review. So I’m not going to share the link. Suffice it to say that it was one of those “this player would be a perfect fit” types of posts. Nothing wrong with those, in general. Speculation is 98% of the offseason.
But the reason that this one made me laugh was because the player in question was Connor Joe as a first base upgrade. That’s right, your 2019 opening day left-fielder.
Reader, when I tell you I cackled, I am not exaggerating. Nothing against Connor Joe, let me be clear. It’s just that it would be perhaps the Giants-iest move ever to sign him again after the way they handled his rookie season.
I know that the rumor mill is starting to pick up steam lately regarding the first base position, but I don’t actually see the Giants doing that.
I’m also not convinced that they are even looking to trade LaMonte Wade, Jr.. I don’t really get the sense that that’s the plan from the organization. They have expressed a belief that the infield they currently have is going to be one of their biggest strengths going into the season.
That said, I will leave you with a more legitimate take about the first base situation than the author-less AI-generated one. Head on over to Sports Illustrated, where Nick Ziegler writes that the Giants are predicted to sign Anthony Rizzo.
How many days until Opening Day?
50, but we are one week away from pitchers and catchers reporting, so it’s going to start to fly by soon enough.
