Best of luck to a fun Giant.
The New York Yankees acquired a pair of center fielders on Tuesday. And while Cody Bellinger might be the more known name among the two — and the one who will actually be on the team’s Major League roster — it’s the other outfielder who matters for San Francisco Giants fans. According to multiple reports (and confirmed on the official MiLB website), prospect Ismael Munguia has signed a Minor League deal with the Yankees.
Munguia signed with the Giants during the 2015 international signing period, and debuted for the organization in 2016. He slowly climbed the ranks, making fans along the way, and peaked with a standout performance as a non-roster invitee to Spring Training earlier this year. Munguia impressed in Scottsdale, earning the Barney Nugent award and looking like he could potentially play his way onto the Major League depth charts.
The season, however, didn’t go very well for him. Munguia couldn’t carry that momentum with him to AAA Sacramento, and was eventually demoted to AA Richmond, while other outfield prospects passed him on the depth charts. And so, when he reached free agency (not for the first time), he decided to try a change of scenery.
Wishing him all the best!
