It’s beginning to look a lot like 2012.
Good morning, baseball fans!
The rumor mill is churning, churning, churning ever onward as the off-season continues to slog along. Currently, the San Francisco Giants are reportedly considered to be the top landing spot for another highly accomplished veteran pitcher.
According to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, the Giants are viewed as one of the teams most likely to sign free agent Max Scherzer to a similar deal as Justin Verlander.
I’m trying to imagine telling my 2012-self that the two would potentially reunite in their 40s and playing for the Giants. She has a lot of questions. Mostly about time travel and the 2020s in general.
Anyway, Scherzer is an eight-time All Star and two-time Cy Young Award winner who has a plethora of playoff experience and success over his 17-year career. He’s pitched in the World Series for the Detroit Tigers in 2012 (we all remember how that played out), the Washington Nationals in 2019 when they won it all, and the Texas Rangers when they won it all in 2023 as well.
The dude’s resume is quite impressive and if he were to hang it all up today, he’d easily be in the Hall of Fame. But injuries are a concern. He made only nine starts in 2024 for the Rangers, with persistent arm fatigue and nerve issues that would be a continued concern for any team he lands with.
All of this said, take this rumor with a grain of salt. Just about every team seems to also be predicted to be the “most likely” landing spot for Scherzer from some source or another.
How many days until Opening Day?
57. Here’s hoping it speeds up a little.
