Logan Webb of the San Francisco Giants made the most of his postseason debut as he stifled the Los Angeles Dodgers batters in game one of the NLDS. Webb did not allow a run in 7 2/3 innings while striking out ten Dodgers. He also did not allow a walk. In addition, he only gave up five hits. His pitches were electric, as was the crowd.
Walker Buehler was not as productive. In the first inning, Buster Posey smashed a high fastball on the outside edge of the plate over the right-field wall. The ball bounced behind the seats and landed in the water for a two-run home run. Buehler did not have his best stuff on Friday night, but he managed to keep runs off the board for the most part. The Giants did not score again until the seventh inning when Kris Bryant launched a solo home run to left-center off of Buehler. Buehler got one more out in the seventh and then left the game after 6 1/3 innings. Buehler gave up three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five.
Webb Stifles Dodgers in Postseason Debut
The night was Logan Webb’s. It was a stellar performance. The young righty is a Dodger killer. Coming into the game, Webb was already sporting a 2.25 ERA and 0.69 WHIP this season against the Dodgers. In addition, he was already holding the Dodgers to a .127 batting average with a .418 OPS this season. Logan Webb makes those numbers look legitimate, especially with a postseason debut like the one tonight against the 106-win Dodgers. This was not a night of bad calls at all. During some games against the Giants this season, Dodgers fans were able to blame bad umpiring for losses to the Giants. But tonight was about great pitching by the Giants. Logan Webb shut down the Dodgers.
Once Webb finally left the game in the eighth inning, the Dodgers bats were still silenced. They were caught in the Webb tonight. There were no Dodgers baserunners after Logan Webb left the game. The Giants ultimately won the game 4-0 with one more solo home run hit by Brandon Crawford off of Alex Vesia in the eighth inning.
The Dodgers hope to rebound from this defeat with 20-game winning lefty Julio Urias on the mound against Giants ace righty Kevin Gausman Saturday night at 6:07 PM PDT. The Giants now lead 1-0 in the best of five games series.
