Wood and Solano could return to the team in the next few days
Good morning, baseball fans! I know we’re not thrilled about losing ground in the division, but let’s try to keep some perspective. The winning streak they were just on was amazing. Very impressive. But they literally can’t win every game and the Padres are better than the Cubs and Rockies. It was bound to happen.
Breathe. Step away from the stairs.
You can’t say they didn’t put up a fight, at least. Dingers on dingers. They’re gonna be just fine. A team that relies on their bullpen to pitch two full games per rotation is going to have a rough night now and then.
But there’s an update on that front. Alex Wood could start as soon as Saturday, having thrown a short simulation game against Donovan Solano and Alex Dickerson yesterday. Wood has been on the injured list for COVID-19 but is recovering well. He would be on a pitch count limit when he returns, however. Solano should also be returning to the team within the next few days as well, but Dickerson will continue to do rehab games to get at bats for now as there isn’t a glaring need in the outfield.
Meanwhile, Johnny Cueto played catch yesterday for the first time since going on the injured list. His return will probably take a bit longer, but the fact that he’s playing catch is a hopeful sign that the rotation won’t always be three guys and a bullpen.
