More votes for the All-Star.
On Wednesday, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWA) announced the voting for the 2024 National League Cy Young Award. And for the third consecutive season, San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb received votes. Webb finished sixth in voting, which comes after being the runner-up in 2023, and finishing 11th in 2022.
Like all BBWA awards, Cy Young voting is chosen by 30 ballots, with two writers from each chapter in the respective league. For the Cy Young, the ballot has five names on it, which is different than Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year (three names) and MVP (10 names).
Webb appeared on 10 of the 30 ballots, earning two third-place votes, four fourth-place votes, and four fifth-place votes, for a total of 18 points. That was better than all but five names in the National League: Chicago Cubs lefty Shōta Imanaga (38 points); San Diego Padres preseason trade pickup Dylan Cease (45 points); Pittsburgh Pirates sensation and Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes (53 points); Philadelphia Phillies ace and former Giants draft pick Zack Wheeler (130 points); and the winner, Atlanta Braves southpaw Chris Sale (198 points).
The Cy Young voters from the San Francisco chapter were The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly and MLB.com’s Maria Guardado. Webb earned a fifth-place vote from Guardado, and was not on Baggarly’s ballot; both writers voted for Sale in first place. You can find a breakdown of all the votes here.
While Webb’s ERA of 3.47 was his worst in his three seasons of earning votes, his FIP of 2.95 was his best. He led the National League in innings pitched with 204.2, and led the Majors in batters faced with 841. And he made the All-Star team for the first time!
Anyway you cut it, it was a brilliant individual season for Webb. But a year ago, when he was in the running to win the award, he admitted that it doesn’t mean too much if the team isn’t winning games. So you can be sure that his offseason motivation is a desire to return to the postseason, not take home individual awards.
But hopefully both happen. And hopefully soon.
