The Giants aren’t doing what they were supposed to do, at all.
Hello and happy Sunday.
You probably don’t need me to tell you that the San Francisco Giants have had a shocking season this year. You’ve been here. You’ve witnessed it. You know what’s going on.
The Giants were supposed to fight for mediocrity, and instead are fighting for the best record in baseball. They were supposed to lag far behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, and have instead been fighting to keep the Dodgers at bay all year while the Padres have fallen out of the rear view mirror. They were supposed to ship out guys like Kevin Gausman and Jake McGee at the trade deadline, and instead added a star in Kris Bryant.
Or, to sum it up: when the season began, Fangraphs projected the Giants for 76.3 wins, with a 0.2% chance of winning the NL West and a 5.7% chance of making the postseason. Barring a serious collapse, they’ll eclipse the 100-win mark for the first time since 2003, and just the fourth time since moving to San Francisco. They’re making the postseason — it’s just a matter of whether they can hang onto the division or not.
It’s been a fun ride, and hopefully more fun is in the future. And it’s definitely been the most surprising (regular) season that I can remember. Is it the most surprising one you’ve seen?
