San Francisco Giants star infielder Matt Chapman is in talks for a possible contract extension with them this season. Chapman is having a prized first season with the Giants. But will he extend his contract or become a free agent again? This could all depend on what kind of contract Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi offers to Chapman. If they present him with an enticing nine-digit contract it would certainly be a tough offer to refuse.

Chapman’s Revamped Season
Chapman’s disappointing season with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023 had many people questioning the 31-year-old’s star caliber. His offense was flat and he was also sidelined with injuries. There was plenty of speculation on where he would land after the Blue Jays. But this season he has returned to form as the star third baseman that we are all familiar with.
Chapman signed a one-year, $18 million contract with the Giants on March 3rd. This season, he has sported a .243 batting average with 20 home runs, and 62 RBI. He continues to be an elite fielder, making several impressive plays at third base this season. Two days ago he made a crisp backhanded play against the Chicago White Sox. On August 4th against the Cincinnati Reds he made an incredible barehanded throw on a soft grounder to get the out at first. The accuracy, speed and precision on the play was dynamite.

Chapman is a four-time Glove Glove winner and has always been recognized for his stellar efforts with his defense, as he has great range. Chapman can also throw as fast as 98 mph. The Giants wanting to extend him this season is a smart move, as he has been a solid addition to their clubhouse. Chapman extending his contract with the Giants makes sense, as he’s found himself a new environment where he has excelled. Chapman has returned to being an exciting player to watch both in the field and at the plate. The star infielder has yet to earn a World Series title, but is certainly deserving of one. The Giants have work to do, though. They are currently sitting at .500 and are five games out of a wild card spot.
