The deal is reportedly for two years and has a value of $25 million. There is also an opt-out clause. At the time of writing, the Giants have not confirmed the deal yet. Manaea joins a rotation that includes veterans Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood along with recent breakout star Logan Webb. Manaea is coming off of a season during which he won eight games with the San Diego Padres. He also posted a 4.96 ERA, a 1.297 WHIP, and a 75 ERA+.
The Career of Sean Manaea
The Kansas City Royals selected Sean Manaea with the 34th overall pick in the 2013 Draft. He was coming off his best season at Indiana State, going 5-4 with a 1.47 ERA. His time in the minors began with the Single A-Advanced Wilmington Blue Rocks. He had some success there, yet had trouble finding consistent playing time throughout 2015. At the trade deadline that year, he and Aaron Brooks were shipped to the Oakland Athletics. The return in the deal was Ben Zobrist, who went on to help the Royals win a world title that year.
After jumping from Single-A to Triple-A in 2016, the A’s called Sean Manaea to the big leagues. He went on to spend six years with the team, winning 50 games and posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.204 WHIP, and 107 ERA+. His biggest claim to fame, though, came on April 21, 2018. In a game with the Boston Red Sox, Manaea hurled the 297th no-hitter in Major League history. It was the 16th ever by an Athletic and the first since Dallas Braden’s perfect game in 2010. Sean Manaea had three more somewhat successful seasons before being traded to the Padres in April 2022.
