The San Francisco Giants held an introductory press conference for new team president Buster Posey that lasted just over 30 minutes. In his opening remarks, Posey addressed the fans and reflected nostalgically on the franchise’s better days. He emphasized the importance of fundamental baseball and noted that attracting high-profile free agents will be a key priority in the offseason. Posey stated that his first order of business would be finding a new general manager to replace Pete Putila, who has held the position since October 2022.

Notes from Buster Posey’s Introductory Press Conference
Prioritizing Preparedness
Posey aims for the Giants to be a prepared team and will promote high standards for fundamental baseball. When asked about his vision, Posey frequently expressed his hope that the Giants can play crisp, well-prepared baseball.
Maybe It’s Melvin’s Fault?
When questioned about the terms of his new role as President of Baseball Operations, as well as his position as a board member and part of the ownership group, Greg Johnson clarified that Posey has signed a three-year contract for his new position, although he did not disclose any financial details. A tense moment arose when Posey and Johnson were asked about the possibility of extending Bob Melvin‘s contract beyond next season. Johnson deferred to Posey regarding Melvin and didn’t commit to Melvin beyond 2025. Melvin had expressed earlier in the press conference how he “didn’t like him” (Posey) for all the problems he created as an opposing player. While Melvin and Posey both conveyed enthusiasm for collaborating and working together, Posey did not commit to extending Melvin’s contract past the 2025 season when pressed.
Can Brian Sabean Be Lured from the Yankees to Return to the Bay?
Regarding his search for a new GM, Posey expressed his desire to begin immediately, looking for a leader who will empower the staff and ideally has a scouting background. During a later segment on KNBR, host Greg Papa specifically inquired about the possibility of Brian Sabean returning to the Giants. Posey indicated that he plans to reach out to Sabean for mentorship and advice. He is eager to restore the brand of baseball that led the city to three World Series championships. Hiring a new GM is Posey’s top priority, and fans are hopeful to see this search unfold and culminate in a decision soon.
