Predictable roster moves after a bullpen game.
The San Francisco Giants had a bullpen game on Monday and on Wednesday, which made a roster move ahead of Thursday’s matinee all but a guarantee. And it ended up being a rather predictable on.
Shortly before their game against the San Diego Padres, the Giants recalled left-handed pitcher Sammy Long, a starter-reliever hybrid who can fit into whatever role the Giants need to eat some innings. In turn, the Giants optioned right-handed pitcher Jay Jackson, one of seven arms to appear in Wednesday’s loss.

Long has appeared in 11 games this season, his first in the Majors. He has a 5.72 ERA and 4.26 FIP, with 38 strikeouts to 15 walks in 39.1 innings. He seems a year away from being a major contributor, but he has extreme upside.
Jackson has made 22 appearances and has a 3.92 ERA and 3.99 FIP, with 26 strikeouts to 10 walks in 20.2 innings.
