All the action in one place!
Wednesday, January 15 is the start of yet another international signing period. The San Francisco Giants didn’t get the unprecedented rose of the class, MLB-ready star pitcher Rōki Sasaki, but in the lead up to the 15th they’ve been praised for the players they’re set to sign with their pool of $5,146,200 (one of the lowest in baseball after signing Qualifying Offers last offseason, though they can trade for additional money).
And indeed, the Giants, as expected, kicked off the signing period by inking prized shortstop Josuar de Jesus González, widely considered one of the very best prospects in this year’s class.
As the names roll in, we’ll keep you posted on everyone that the Giants have signed.
Josuar de Jesus González
Position: Shortstop
Country: Dominican Republic
Age: 17 years, 3 months
Signing bonus: $2.5 million (also reported at $2,997,500)
González is a five-tool player, and viewed by Fangraphs and MLB Pipeline as the top international prospect in this class (excluding Sasaki). He’s a switch-hitter with power from both sides, has excellent bat and foot speed, and the skills, athleticism, and instincts to stick at shortstop. A spectacularly exciting signing.
Djean Macares
Position: Outfielder
Country: Aruba
Age: 16 years, 8 months
Signing bonus: $1.1 million (estimated)
While de Jesus González is the shining star of the class, the Giants also got a highly-touted prospect in Macares, the top prospect from Aruba this year. Macares, who bats and fields left-handed, is very polished for such a young player. He’s been praised for his pitch recognition and discipline at the plate, though it’s not yet known if his physical tools will match up with that as he grows.
Excluding Sasaki, Macares was ranked as the No. 24 prospect in the class by MLB Pipeline, No. 35 by Baseball America, and No. 45 by Fangraphs.
Yulian Barreto
Position: Shortstop
Country: Venezuela
Age: 17 years, 4 months
Signing bonus: $900,000
It’s excellent to see the Giants targeting up-the-middle players, and Barreto is another one who comes highly ranked. The righty came in at No. 40 on Baseball America’s list and No. 43 for Fangraphs (again excluding Sasaki). He’s viewed as someone who is likely to be able to stick at shortstop due to his hands, arm, and agility, and is more of a line-drive/contact hitter than a power bat.
The Venezuelan SS Yulian Barreto has officially signed with the San Francisco Giants.
