The San Francisco Giants have announced that infielder Wilmer Flores is out for the year. Flores was put on the 10-day injured list a couple of weeks ago with knee tendinitis. He will have a surgical Tenex procedure, according to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. Flores will be transferred to the 60-day IL when a roster spot is needed.
Wilmer Flores is out for the season following a Tenex knee procedure on his quad tendon, Bob Melvin said. Melvin said he believes the ongoing knee issue had a lot to do with Flores’ steep downturn at the plate. He can exercise a $3.5m player option for 2025.

Manager Bob Melvin said today that there isn’t enough season left for Flores to return this year, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The Giants infielder has been less lethal at the plate than usual this year, as he is hitting just .206. It does seem that the knee has been affecting Flores’ play. His batting average normally hovers around the .280 mark and he broke the 20 home run mark last year after hovering near it in the past.
Wilmer Flores Out for Season with Knee Injury
A Pattern
Unfortunately, this is the second time Flores has landed on the injured list with the same issue. He was sidelined from June 28 to July 9, only to be placed back on the IL a couple of weeks later.
The Giants are hoping that the procedure will mean a return to Flores’s normal production next season. The San Francisco infielder came up as a second baseman in the New York Mets organization. He has played at the hot corner in the majors as well. However, this year, due to his lack of mobility and lineup construction, Flores has played at first base the majority of the time.
Memorable Moment
Who could forget July 29, 2015? The media reported that the Mets had traded Flores along with future star Zack Wheeler to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Carlos Gomez. Flores, who had found out about the rumor, was moved to tears on the field. The Mets denied the trade discussions, but later admitted the trade fell through over concerns of Gomez’s health.
Flores became a free agent in 2019. He then signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks before joining the Giants in 2020.
