Here we go again!
We went a few years without needing a runoff, but the 2025 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List now faces its second runoff in as many weeks. And funnily enough, only one vote kept it from being a three-player runoff!
As it is, two names split the top votes in the latest chapter of the CPL, which will see us eventually rank the top 44 prospects in the San Francisco Giants farm system. So today we’ll vote on those two, with the winner earning the title of No. 27 prospect and the loser No. 28.
Today is a battle of right-handed starting pitchers: Josh Bostick and Argenis Cayama.
Bostick, who turned 23 in October, was the Giants eighth-round pick in the 2023 draft, signed for a $397,500 slot bonus that was in line with a fifth-round pick. He spent his first full season with Low-A San Jose where his numbers were modest (4.78 ERA and 4.71 FIP), but he still impressed. Bostick struck out 10.2 batters per nine innings while walking just 3.7, had a fairly large workload (107.1 innings), and earned rave reviews from scouts for the life on his pitches. He could move quickly if things click this year.
Cayama is in a much different position. Signed this time last year as an international free agent out of Venezuela, Cayama — who turned 18 in September — was mighty impressive in the Dominican Summer League. In 10 starts and 24.1 innings there, the youngster compiled a 2.59 ERA and a 3.20 FIP, with 10.7 strikeouts and 3.3 walks per nine innings. The Giants seem extremely high on him internally, and he should get a chance to show how electric his pitches can be in the states this year.
So, who’s it gonna be?
