Who is the 21st-best prospect in the Giants system?
We’re not quite at the halfway point of the 2025 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List, but we have reached a milestone: a top 20! Following the last chapter of the CPL, which will see us rank the top 44 prospects in the San Francisco Giants organization, we now have the crowdsourced Giants top 20, which certainly looks a lot different than last year’s, with just half of the names appearing on the 2024 top 20.
Rounding out this milestone is a player making their CPL debut: right-handed pitcher Trent Harris, who clocks in as the No. 20 player in the Giants system. He’s also arguably the first pure reliever on this year’s CPL, depending on how you’re feeling about Reggie Crawford.
Harris has already been a massive success story, after signing with the Giants in 2023 when he went unselected in the MLB Draft. The underlying metrics in his debut season — as well as the 0.43 ERA in 21 innings across rookie ball and Low-A — made him a trendy pick on prospect lists for 2024, with Fangraphs shockingly putting him in their top 15.
But his 2024 season justified anyone who had been high on him. With a four-pitch repertoire that has a fastball and curveball playing a star role, Harris — who turns 26 later this month — mowed down batters all year long. He began the year in Low-A San Jose where he posted a tidy 1.14 ERA before getting promoted, then had just a 2.00 ERA with High-A Eugene. That earned him a chance to extend his season by an extra week with AA Richmond, where he appeared in two games and pitched three innings.
All year long, Harris displayed arguably the two things you most want to see out of a pitcher: an ability to avoid both bats and balls. Across the three levels he posted a 1.81 ERA and a 3.02 FIP, with 11.9 strikeouts and just 2.8 walks per nine innings. Those strikeout and walk figures were sixth and 10th, respectively, out of the 49 Giants prospects to throw at least 50 innings last year. His strikeout minus walk percentage (which is exactly what it sounds like) of 26.3% was not only far and away the best in the organization, but ranked 26th out of 1,400 Minor League pitchers with at least 50 innings thrown.
On top of all that, Harris wasn’t a guy who just came in and threw gas for 10-15 pitches before wearing out. Despite working solely in relief, he averaged more than two innings per outing, finishing the year with 36 appearances and 79.2 innings thrown. Impressive stuff all around.
Soon we’ll find out how it can play against more advanced hitters. Harris was nothing short of magical in 2024, but he was also a 25 year old facing A-Ball batters. A bigger challenge awaits him in AA Richmond this year, where he’ll almost certainly begin the year.
