Who is the 20th-best prospect in the Giants system?
Note: Today is nomination day! Head to the comment section to nominate the next group of prospects to vote on in the CPL.
The 2025 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List keeps chugging along, as we get closer and closer to ranking the top 44 prospects in the San Francisco Giants system. We’re almost at the halfway mark!
The last chapter of the CPL brought us a player who is very likely to make his MLB debut in the upcoming season: right-handed pitcher Carson Ragsdale. The 6’8 Ragsdale has been voted as the No. 19 prospect on the farm, which is a rise of 13 spots from his placement at No. 32 a year ago.
That rise came because Ragsdale had a strong season — and, perhaps even more importantly, a healthy one. Ragsdale — who was a fourth-round pick by the Phillies in 2020, and traded to the Giants for Sam Coonrod before making his debut — had been plagued by injuries lately, pitching just 5.2 innings in 2022 and 27.2 innings in 2023. But he stayed healthy all through 2024, pitching 120.2 innings, which was the fifth-highest total among Giants Minor Leaguers.
Despite his short 2023 in High-A, Ragsdale was assigned to AA Richmond to start 2024, and was quite impressive there. He compiled a 3.49 ERA and 3.92 FIP, and most impressively, struck out 12.1 batters per nine innings (albeit with 4.2 walks). That earned him a midseason promotion to AAA Sacramento, where he ran into some of the struggles expected of a pitcher in the Pacific Coast League. In 13 PCL games, Ragsdale had a 5.03 ERA and a 5.64 FIP, with 9.6 strikeouts and 4.4 walks per nine innings.
Ragsdale was added to the roster after the season as one of two Rule 5 protections, which sets him up to make his MLB debut in 2025, though he’ll surely start the year in Sacramento. The Giants have developed Ragsdale — who turns 27 in May — as a starter, but he could end up sliding into a power relief role at some point, too.
Now let’s add to the list, and don’t forget that it’s nomination day!
