Kevin Gausman vs. Max Fried
The Giants head to Atlanta tonight to start a three game series against the Braves.
Taking the mound for the Giants tonight will be Kevin Gausman, who enters tonight’s game with a 2.47 ERA, 2.88 FIP, with 174 strikeouts to 46 walks in 146 innings pitched. The Giants have won Gausman’s last four starts, but his last start against Oakland, they sure did make it difficult. Gausman allowed six hits, five runs, but only two earned, walking one and striking out five in 3.2 innings pitched.
Want to know more about how Gausman’s been pitching? Of course you do. So check out Yasi Khan’s debut post about his second half struggles while you wait for the game to start.
He’ll be facing off against Max Fried, left hander for the Braves, who enters tonight’s game with a 3.49 ERA, 3.41 FIP, with 117 strikeouts to 34 walks in 118 innings pitched. Fried is coming in hot, after pitching a complete game shutout against the Orioles last Friday, allowing only four hits and striking out four. (Then again, it was the Orioles.) Similar to Gausman, the Braves have won the last four games Fried has started, and he’s only allowed one earned run or less per game, averaging six innings per start.
Lineup notes: No Brandons or Evan Longoria tonight, but Buster Posey is back in the lineup, batting cleanup. LaMonte Wade Jr. also appears to be getting the night off. Also, Chadwick Tromp has been sent back down so the Giants could reactivate Kevin Gausman, though Thairo Estrada will likely stay for a bit. Donovan Solano, though vaccinated, tested positive for Covid-19 and has to remain in New York for now.
