Who’s on the roster as Spring Training gets started?
Spring Training is officially underway. It seems like a good time to take stock of who is actually on the San Francisco Giants 40-man roster as things ramp up.
So here are all the pitchers on the roster. Some might be gone at some point, and some new names will pop up as the year goes on. Until then, here’s who the Giants have ready to go on the roster.
Tristan Beck
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 28 years, 7 months
2024 MLB stats: 7 games (1 start), 16 innings, 1.69 ERA, 3.98 FIP, 7.9 K/9, 2.3 BB/9
2024 MiLB stats (AAA): 5 games (5 starts), 13.2 innings, 7.90 ERA, 4.86 FIP, 11.2 K/9, 2.0 BB/9
Minor League options: 2
2024 was either an awful year or an incredible year for Beck, depending on your point of view. Viewed as having a shot in Spring Training to earn a spot in the rotation, Beck was instead shut down due to an aneurysm in his pitching arm. There’s simply no way of knowing how someone will recover from that … but Beck not only recovered, he also re-joined the Giants and pitched excellently in the final month of the season. Now he’s (hopefully) fully healthy and, because of his time spent on the IL, has retained his second option year. It feels like the Giants probably view him more as a reliever and swing man than a potential starter, but it’s clear that he’s valued.
2025 roster status: On the good side of the bubble for Opening Day, will surely play a role throughout the year.
Hayden Birdsong
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 23 years, 5 months
2024 MLB stats: 16 games (16 starts), 72 innings, 4.75 ERA, 4.67 FIP, 11.0 K/9, 5.4 BB/9
2024 MiLB stats (AA/AAA): 13 games (13 starts), 57.1 innings, 2.51 ERA, 3.76 FIP, 11.8 K/9, 4.1 BB/9
Minor League options: 3
Birdsong’s MLB debut resembled what many expected Kyle Harrison’s to look like. It was high octane, full of strikeouts, and fairly out of control. He has arguably surpassed Harrison as having the highest ceiling of the Giants’ group of young pitchers, though he’s also pitched just nine innings in AAA, so there’s plenty of development left for him.
2025 roster status: Underdog to win the No. 5 starter spot, but will surely make plenty of starts in the Majors throughout the year.
Spencer Bivens
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 30 years, 7 months
2024 MLB stats: 27 games (2 starts), 48.2 innings, 3.14 ERA, 4.79 FIP, 6.8 K/9, 2.0 BB/9
2024 MiLB stats (AAA): 27 games, 49.1 innings, 2.92 ERA, 4.14 FIP, 7.7 K/9, 3.1 BB/9
Minor League options: 2
Bivens was one of the best stories of the 2024 season for the Giants. After a lengthy, international career in which he didn’t make it to the Minor Leagues until his age-28 season, Bivens made his MLB debut shortly before his 30th birthday. And he was good! He’s probably near the back of the 40-man roster as the Giants have populated their roster with exciting young arms, but he has a lot to offer.
2025 roster status: In competition for a bullpen job, but probably not a favorite.
Mason Black
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 25 years, 2 months
2024 MLB stats: 9 games (8 starts), 36.1 innings, 6.44 ERA, 5.45 FIP, 7.7 K/9, 3.7 BB/9
2024 MiLB stats (AAA): 20 games (20 starts), 84.1 innings, 4.59 ERA, 5.19 FIP, 9.3 K/9, 4.2 BB/9
Minor League options: 2
2024 was a tale of two seasons for Black. He stood out in Spring Training, and nearly made the Opening Day roster. Then he was exceptional in the PCL, and earned a Major League debut, which went brilliantly for four innings. And then the wheels came off a bit, with Black really struggling in both the Majors and Minors. He has a ton of talent, but it’s yet to be determined if he has strong enough stuff to stick as a starter.
2025 roster status: Likely spot starter who will also be in competition for a long relief role.
Camilo Doval
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 27 years, 7 months
2024 MLB stats: 62 games, 59 innings, 4.88 ERA, 3.71 FIP, 11.9 K/9, 6.0 BB/9
2024 MiLB stats (AAA): 5 games, 5.2 innings, 3.18 ERA, 1.89 FIP, 11.1 K/9, 1.6 BB/9
Minor League options: 2
Doval’s struggles in 2024 — which culminated in getting optioned a year after being named an All-Star — are well documented. But there are also a lot of reasons to expect 2025 to be better. His numbers suggest he got a little unlucky: his 1.17 difference between ERA and FIP was the 27th largest positive mark among 351 MLB pitchers who threw at least 50 innings. His strikeout rate was better than in the last two seasons, while his BABIP was the worst of his career. There were certainly some real issues, too, notably an inability to hold runners at first, and a way-too-high walk rate.
2025 roster status: Late-inning reliever, possible setup man, and occasional closer.
Kyle Harrison
Position: Left-handed pitcher
Age: 23 years, 6 months
2024 MLB stats: 24 games (24 starts), 124.1 innings, 4.56 ERA, 4.33 FIP, 8.5 K/9, 3.0 BB/9
Minor League options: 3
There are two ways to look at Harrison’s 2024, his first full season in the Majors. On the one hand, he went from a high-walk prospect who couldn’t pitch deep into games, to a low-walk starter who could reliably give the team five innings an outing. On the other hand, he went from one of the best strikeout pitchers in Minor League history, to a game-manager Major League pitcher who rarely looked electric. Given his age, there’s lots of reason for optimism.
2025 roster status: Heavy favorite to win the No. 5 starter role, will factor heavily into the rotation all year regardless.
Jordan Hicks
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 28 years, 5 months
2024 MLB stats: 29 games (20 starts), 109.2 innings, 4.10 ERA, 4.37 FIP, 7.9 K/9, 3.9 BB/9
Minor League options: 0
When the season ended, many wondered whether Hicks would be considered a starter or a reliever by the new braintrust. Buster Posey said early on that Hicks was part of the rotation, and as the offseason progressed, Posey (and Bob Melvin) only made that sentiment stronger. It’s abundantly clear that the Giants view Hicks as a starter, which is understandable. Hicks was one of the best starters in the league at the beginning of 2024, before running into a wall in his first year not being a power-reliever. Now he has a year of experience under his belt and, critically, a full offseason knowing he’ll be used as a starter. That was missing last year, when he was a free agent reliever trying to convince teams he could start.
2025 roster status: In the starting rotation, with a chance to move to the bullpen at some point.
Sean Hjelle
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 27 years, 9 months
2024 MLB stats: 58 games, 80.2 innings, 3.90 ERA, 3.63 FIP, 8.4 K/9, 1.6 BB/9
Minor League options: 1
In Bob Melvin’s first Spring Training with the Giants, he spoke glowingly about Hjelle, a player who, to that point, had a 6.17 career ERA. It turns out that wasn’t lip service. After missing the start of the year due to injury, Hjelle returned to the Giants in mid-April and stayed on the roster all year. He became an ultra-reliable control pitcher, sporting a minuscule walk rate, rarely looking out of sorts, and pitching with regularity.
2025 roster status: Essentially a lock for a bullpen spot, with the potential to work his way into a long relief and spot starter role.
Trevor McDonald
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 23 years, 11 months
2024 MLB stats: 1 game, 3 innings, 0.00 ERA, 3.50 FIP, 3.0 K/9, 3.0 BB/9
2024 MiLB stats (AAA, AA, A+, and ACL): 23 games (20 starts), 86 innings, 4.40 ERA, 4.67 FIP, 8.2 K/9, 3.1 BB/9
Minor League options: 2
McDonald was finally mostly healthy in 2024, and showed just how electric he can be. A Rule 5 protection a year ago, he made his MLB debut on the final game of the season. It seems very clear that McDonald will have a quality career in the bigs … it’s just not yet clear what role it will be in.
2025 roster status: Outside shot at making the bullpen out of camp, year-long up-and-down option for the bullpen and rotation.
Erik Miller
Position: Left-handed pitcher
Age: 27 years, 0 months
2024 MLB stats: 73 games, 67.1 innings, 3.88 ERA, 3.67 FIP, 11.6 K/9, 5.1 BB/9
Minor League options: 3
What a debut year it was for Miller. A Rule 5 protection in the offseason, he was optioned in Spring Training, but still made the Opening Day roster. And after all that, only 12 pitchers appeared in more games than Miller last year (including two of his teammates). He established himself as a high-leverage option, and seemingly the only pitcher in the world who has Shohei Ohtani’s number. He’ll need to reduce the walks if he wants to avoid the occasional Camilo Doval-esque season, but if he can do that, the sky is the limit. He’s also the only left-handed reliever on the 40-man roster at the start of Spring Training.
2025 roster status: High-leverage relief role.
Carson Ragsdale
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 26 years, 8 months
2024 MLB stats: Did not play
2024 MiLB stats (AAA/AA): 27 games (26 starts), 120.2 innings, 4.18 ERA, 4.68 FIP, 11.0 K/9, 4.3 BB/9
Minor League options: 3
Ragsdale was one of just two players added to the roster this winter as a Rule 5 protection. He’s a proven quality starter in the Minors, with powerful enough stuff to move to a single-inning relief role if that’s in everyone’s best interest. We can expect more improvement from Ragsdale this season, since 2024 was his first full season after two years almost completely lost to injury.
2025 roster status: Very long shot to make the Opening Day roster, likely up-and-down option as a starter or in long relief.
Robbie Ray
Position: Left-handed pitcher
Age: 33 years, 4 months
2024 MLB stats: 7 games (7 starts), 30.2 innings, 4.70 ERA, 4.96 FIP, 12.6 K/9, 4.4 BB/9
Minor League options: 0
After suffering an injury that required Tommy John surgery in the first game of the 2023 season, Ray returned late in 2024 and pitched just seven times, while dealing with another injury. His stats painted the picture of someone whose upcoming season could go a lot of different ways. The ERA is a reminder that pitchers returning from injuries don’t always make it back fully, and also a reminder that even at his best, Ray gives up some hard contact. But the 43 strikeouts in 30.2 innings was an equally firm reminder that the electricity that won him a Cy Young Award a few years ago is still there.
2025 roster status: In the rotation.
Randy Rodríguez
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 25 years, 5 months
2024 MLB stats: 35 games, 52.1 innings, 4.30 ERA, 3.34 FIP, 9.1 K/9, 3.1 BB/9
2024 MiLB stats (AAA): 10 games, 10.2 innings, 1.69 ERA, 3.08 FIP, 8.4 K/9, 3.4 BB/9
Minor League options: 1
This time last year, it felt like a critical season was ahead for Rodríguez. He had struggled mightily with walks in his two years in the Minors since getting added to the 40-man roster, and was approaching what was presumably his final option year. He would need to really prove something in 2024. He did exactly that and then, somehow, it was reported that he still has an option year remaining, for reasons I don’t understand but certainly won’t argue with. He showed some electric pitches in the Majors and, most importantly, seemed to figure out his control issues.
2025 roster status: Key member of the bullpen, likely makes the Opening Day roster.
Tyler Rogers
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 34 years, 1 month
2024 MLB stats: 77 games, 70.1 innings, 2.82 ERA, 3.56 FIP, 6.5 K/9, 0.8 BB/9
Minor League options: 0
Perpetually among the most underrated players on the roster, Rogers is back for his final season of arbitration before entering free agency. He walked just six of the 290 batters he faced last year … and two of those walks were intentional. I’m gearing up for another year of reminding people that he’s very good.
2025 roster status: High-leverage reliever, likely setup man.
Landen Roupp
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 26 years, 5 months
2024 MLB stats: 23 games (4 starts), 50.1 innings, 3.58 ERA, 3.42 FIP, 8.4 K/9, 4.7 BB/9
2024 MiLB stats (AAA/ACL): 11 games (8 starts), 26.1 innings, 3.08 ERA, 2.90 FIP, 14.4 K/9, 4.8 BB/9
Minor League options: 2
Roupp opened so many eyes in 2024, and proved that he belongs in the tier of young starters that Kyle Harrison and Hayden Birdsong are in. He’s a bit older than that duo but, because of injuries, he’s pitched just 172.2 innings in the Minor Leagues in his career. The Giants seem pretty strong in their belief that he’ll be a quality starter long-term, and it’s hard to argue with that.
2025 roster status: Very outside chance of winning the No. 5 starter spot, strong contender to make Opening Day roster in the bullpen, likely to be a fill-in for the rotation throughout the year.
Carson Seymour
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 26 years, 1 month
2024 MLB stats: Did not play
2024 MiLB stats (AAA): 29 games (28 starts), 134.1 innings, 4.82 ERA, 5.32 FIP, 8.8 K/9, 4.0 BB/9
Minor League options: 3
Seymour, like his namesake Ragsdale, was added to the roster in November as a Rule 5 protection. He’s similar to Mason Black last year, in that he’s a proven Minor League performer who can make starts or serve in long relief, but it’s unclear if he has the stuff to stick in the rotation.
2025 roster status: Very unlikely to make the Opening Day roster, likely up-and-down as a long reliever or spot starter.
Justin Verlander
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 41 years, 11 months
2024 MLB stats: 17 games (17 starts), 90.1 innings, 5.48 ERA, 4.78 FIP, 7.4 K/9, 2.7 BB/9
Minor League options: 0
How optimistic you are about the Giants’ upcoming season likely depends in large part on how optimistic you are about Verlander’s upcoming season. His 2024 was very bad, by his own admission. It was also very injured, and the future Hall of Famer admitted that he needed to prep differently in the offseason at this stage in his career. He’s optimistic. I’m also optimistic. If nothing else, Verlander already is earning his paycheck with mentorship.
2025 roster status: Near the top of the rotation.
Ryan Walker
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 29 years, 2 months
2024 MLB stats: 76 games, 80 innings, 1.91 ERA, 2.52 FIP, 11.1 K/9, 2.0 BB/9
Minor League options: 3
Walker started last year as a decent reliever, quickly became an excellent reliever, eventually became a closer, and ended the year as a dominant closer. Only four pitchers appeared in more games than Walker last year, and only eight pitchers with at least 50 innings thrown had a lower ERA. The hope is that this year the Giants can find a way to be slightly less reliant on Walker, who already has a delivery that makes doctors squirm.
2025 roster status: The closer.
Logan Webb
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 28 years, 2 months
2024 MLB stats: 33 games (33 starts), 204.2 innings, 3.47 ERA, 2.95 FIP, 7.6 K/9, 2.2 BB/9
Minor League options: 0
What’s there to say about Webb, who finally was recognized with an All-Star selection last year? Sure, his ERA went up a bit last year, but his FIP was his lowest since 2021. There’s no reason to expect anything but another great year ahead.
2025 roster status: The Opening Day starter.
Keaton Winn
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Age: 26 years, 11 months
2024 MLB stats: 12 games (12 starts), 55.1 innings, 7.16 ERA, 4.85 FIP, 7.8 K/9, 3.3 BB/9
Minor League options: 2
Remember that anecdote about the difference between Doval’s ERA and FIP? Winn had the third-largest positive difference among all pitchers with at least 50 innings thrown. That was primarily because he was excellent 95% of the time and so bad the other 5% of the time that it brought the whole ship down. He also struggled with injuries, which hopefully explain the 5% part. At this point it’s just hard to know what Winn will provide, but the talent is undeniably there.
2025 roster status: In contention for a short relief role, a long relief role, and sport starter role.
