Justin Verlander vs. Luis F. Castillo
The San Francisco Giants return to Oracle Park today to play their home opener against the Seattle Mariners.
Taking the mound for the Giants will be right-hander Justin Verlander, making his second start of the year. He finished the 2024 season with a 5.48 ERA, 4.78 FIP, with 74 strikeouts to 27 walks in 90.1 innings pitched over 17 starts. His first start of the year was in the Giants’ 3-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, in which he allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk in five innings.
He’ll be facing off against Mariners right-hander Luis F. Castillo, not to be confused with right-hander Luis M. Castillo, a three-time All-Star who is one of the team’s many aces, and a former Giants prospect. The Castillo who is pitching has slightly less impressive qualifications, having only appeared in three games during the 2022 season. He spent the last two years pitching in Japan, and made one strong start in AAA before being added to the roster yesterday. So he’s a bit of an unknown for the Giants, for better or for worse.
Meanwhile, the Mariners are no strangers to Verlander, but none have particularly good numbers against him. J.P. Crawford has a .269 average in 26 lifetime at-bats.
