Yankees hope to even the series in Los Angeles
Longtime A’s fans know this story all too well. A hobbled Dodgers player comes to bat with World Series Game One on the line and with one smooth left-handed swing plants one in the right field bleachers to send the crowd into a frenzy and give his team a victory. Missing was the iconic Vin Scully call, although I heard him in my head! The similarities end there. No one questioned LaRussa’s decision to allow the Hall-of-Fame hurler Eckersley to face the barely walking Gibson. But there was plenty of reasons to question Aaron Boone’s 10th inning decisions. What remains to be seen is the path the remainder of the series will take.
That brings us to World Series Game Two tonight in LA. The National League Champion Los Angeles Dodgers, now leading the series 1-0 take on the visiting American League Champion New York Yankees today at 5:00 PM PDT/8:00 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers will send 26-year-old righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the mound for tonight’s start. Yamamoto is 1-0 in the 2024 post season with a 5.11 ERA. He was 7-2 with a 3.00 ERA during the regular season, pitching ninety innings over eighteen starts. He’s faced the Yankees once this year, on June 7 going seven innings allowing just two hits and no runs in the no-decision.
Boone will send 31-year-old lefthander Carlos Rodón to the mound to try to even the series. Rodón is 1-1 in the 2024 post season with a 4.40 ERA. He was 16-9 with a 3.96 ERA over 175 innings and thirty-two starts. He did not face the Dodgers in 2024.
As was the case last night, presuming Judge and Ohtani as this year’s Most Valuable Players (MVPs), the game will feature five league MVP winners. Will Freeman, Judge, Ohtani, Stanton, or Betts be the difference in this game, or will it fall to one of the other mere mortal players tonight? We’ll have to watch to see.
