Piscotty is out for the rest of 2021
The Oakland A’s announced Friday that outfielder Stephen Piscotty had season-ending surgery on his left wrist. Full text of their medical update:
Stephen Piscotty had successful left wrist surgery today with Dr. Mark Leber at the Gateway Surgery Center in Phoenix. Dr. Leber performed an extensor carpi ulnaris subsheath fixation procedure with favorable results. Piscotty will be out for the remainder of the season.
The A’s placed Piscotty on the 10-day injured list last Saturday, but the wrist had been a problem all year. He also missed time at the end of June because of it, and before that it had been bothering him since spring training. In total, he was limited to 72 games this summer, and he struggled at the plate for the third straight season.
Roster implications: Piscotty was already on the 10-day IL, but being out for the year means he can be moved to the 60-day IL at any time. With active rosters expanding by two spots at the beginning of September, Oakland could call up a player who isn’t on the 40-man roster without having to DFA anybody. Beyond this summer, Piscotty is under contract for one more year in 2022.
