Stephen Piscotty sprained his left wrist and was on the IL on Saturday by the Oakland Athletics. Piscotty had a similar injury that landed him on the IL on June 19th of this year. The injury kept him out of the lineup until July 4th during that stint. In a corresponding move, the Athletics recalled Seth Brown from Triple-A Las Vegas. Brown was in Las Vegas for only one day to make room for Chad Pinder, who was returning from injury.
Piscotty is in the midst of a down season for the Athletics. He has batted to a .220/.282/.353 slash line in 72 games for Oakland this season. That is well below his career slash line of .259/.328/.435. His batting average is currently the lowest it has been in his seven seasons in the big leagues. Piscotty’s slugging percentage is also a career-low and his OBP is the second-lowest of his career. He has played with a lot of injuries throughout the last three seasons. The Athletics would surely like to see him healthy and on the field more often.
Brown Replaces Piscotty
With Piscotty placed on the IL, Seth Brown was recalled. Like Piscotty, Brown has not had a very good season. Brown has batted to a .203/.271/.459 slash line in 93 games for the Athletics. He has a higher slugging percentage than Piscotty due to having more doubles, triples, and home runs. Piscotty has eight doubles, zero triples, and five home runs. Brown has nine doubles, one triple, and 16 home runs. But Brown also has 62 more at-bats this season as well as 22 more games played than Piscotty. Brown also beats out Piscotty in OPS with his at .729. Piscotty’s OPS is sitting at .635 for the season. Neither Brown nor Piscotty walks frequently. If Brown catches fire while Piscotty is on the IL, he may be able to keep a spot on the Athletics roster.
The Athletics are currently in second place, 3.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West.
