A’s pitchers quieted the Mets bats today
Our Athletics were back at it today at Sutter Health Park for the second game of the 3-game-series against the Mets. Today’s matinee will feature the call-up of J.T. Ginn against David Peterson of the Mets. Today’s leadoff hitter Jacob Wilson set out to extend his season opening 14-game hit streak. It was the first time in his MLB career that he’s batted in the number one slot.
Max Muncy got Ginn’s day started with his second consecutive game with a fielding error, but J.T. held it together against the heart of the Mets lineup and no runner advanced beyond first.
In the third, after getting Mets rookie catcher Hayden Senger to ground out, he walked both Lindor and Soto. After a ten-pitch battle with Pete Alonso, he struck him out swinging for the second out and induced a ground out to Brandon Nimmo to extricate himself from the jam. Unfortunately, that ballooned Ginn’s pitch count to fifty-two through three innings.
Jacob Wilson extended his hit streak to fifteen games with a double down the right field line in the bottom of the fourth.

He scored on a base hit by Tyler Soderstrom. That was Tyler’s team leading eleventh RBI of the season.

Shea Langeliers followed with a single to move Soderstrom to second. Miguel Andujar singled to load the bases with just one out. JJ Bleday grounded out to the second baseman scoring Soderstrom. Luis Urías reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases once again. But Max Muncy grounded softly to Francisco Lindor for a force at second to end the inning. At the end of four, the A’s led 2-0.
Hayden Senger singled to lead off the fifth for the Mets. Lindor ground into a force out, swapping positions with Senger. But once again Ginn worked his way out of any trouble.
Brandon Nimmo led off the sixth with a bomb into the outfield berm. That’s two games in a row for Nimmo, and it cut the A’s lead in half, 2-1. Ginn followed that with his sixth strikeout of the day, and it was his final batter of the game. A’s skipper Mark Kotsay pulled him for Justin Sterner. Ginn’s final line was 5.1 innings, four hits, one walk and just the one earned run. Sterner tossed 1.2 innings without allowing a baserunner.
Max Muncy ripped a single off the left field wall, and Jhonny Pereda drove him in with a double to left. Brent Rooker’s good contact but no-luck continued with a long fly ball out to centerfield to end the inning. But not before the A’s grew their lead to 3-1.

Tyler Ferguson replaced Sterner in the top of the eighth. Juan Soto walked for the second time in the game to start the inning. Ferguson struck out Alonso and Nimmo lined out to Bleday in center field. He struck out Starling Marte to end the inning.
After a quiet bottom of the eighth, Kotsay made the call to his closer, Mason Miller to take on the Mets in the ninth. Miller’s first three pitches hit 102-mph as he erased Mark Vientos. After confounding Brett Baty with two more 102+ fastballs Miller stopped him in his tracks with an 88-mph slider. Tyrone Taylor singled to left field. Taylor advanced to second on a wild pitch. But pinch hitter Luis Torrens ground out to Jacob Wilson to end the game and give Miller his fourth save of the young season.
Tomorrow Luis Severino goes up against his former team as the A’s try to take the series from the Mets at Sutter Health Park.
