MLB news roundup
Good morning Athletics Nation and happy Tuesday to you all!
The A’s got the day off yesterday to flush a tough homestand. The club only went 2-4 against the San Diego Padres and New York Mets as their season record has fallen to 6-10, last in the AL West and third-worst in the American League ahead of only the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins. Things aren’t going as hoped and the team has been struggling at their new home ballpark so far, going just 2-7 at Sutter Health Park while consistently playing in front of less than 10,000 fans, most of which are fans of the opposing team anyway.
The good news is that the club has a winning road record and is facing one of the teams that are worse than them as they start their road trip in Chicago. They’ll take on the White Sox for a three-game series that begins tonight, which is also an important day in baseball. And that’s because…
It’s Jackie Robinson Day! Today baseball and its fans honor the man, the myth, the legend himself. Robinson, who broke the color barrier by becoming the first African-American player to play in the big leagues, is honored every year on April 15th, the day he played first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers for the first time 78 years ago.
As is tradition on Jackie Robinson Day, every coach and player will be donning the legend’s iconic #42, a fitting and enduring way to honor the civil rights icon. It’s a visual reminder of how far the game has come from the day he first took a major league field to where the game is today. It’s a simple but powerful sight as we remember how much the game and our country owes Robinson. From joining the military during wartime to standing up for what he believed in and breaking baseball’s color barrier, Robinson is an example for all of us.
So when the A’s take the field tonight in Chicago, let’s all take a moment to reflect on Robinson and his legacy and how one person can alter the course of the game and history. It’s the least we can do for someone who changed all of our lives in more ways than we can imagine.
Have a terrific week, AN. And let’s go A’s!
