Other half of split squad!
The other half of the team is busy with the division rival Rangers. This half of the team will instead travel to the Milwaukee Brewers’ facility to take on the Brew Crew.
The half-strength A’s will be sending out right-hander Mitch Spence for his fourth appearance of the spring. He’s looked impressive during the small sample that is spring training, pitching 8 innings while allowing just one earned run. There was some speculation that Spence was in competition to keep his rotation job from last year but after his strong spring it seems like a foregone conclusion he’ll be in the starting five, likely ticketed for the #4 spot. One more strong outing today would all but solidify that.
The A’s lineup backing Spence up today against the Brewers:
- Jacob Wilson, SS
- Seth Brown, 1B
- Miguel Andujar, DH
- CJ Alexander, RF
- Max Schuemann, 3B
- Jhonny Pereda, C
- Drew Avans, CF
- Max Muncy, 2B
- Esteury Ruiz, LF
While the other game against the Rangers features a lineup stuffed with expected regulars, this lineup instead features mostly players on the outside looking in. Only the top three batters in this lineup is expected to be on the Opening Day roster, though nothing is official as of this posting. Things especially aren’t looking good for Esteury Ruiz, who out of options and could find himself in another organization soon.
That lineup will be going up against Brewers ace Freddy Peralta. He’s only made a pair of appearances this spring but should be looking to ramp up with the regular season mere days away. He’s probably ready to start ramping up for real and today could be trouble if he brings his A-game.
