The A’s lost today in their Spring Training matchup against the Angels on Saturday afternoon, falling to their Los Angeles rivals 5-0 that brings their spring record to 5-2.
Righty Osvaldo Bido started the game for our A’s today as he continues to make a case for a starting spot in the Opening Day rotation. While his first two innings of work went smoothly he seemingly lost control in his third inning of work. A HBP followed by three walks and a sac fly gave Los Angeles a quick 3-0 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. Not the best outing from our potential #5 starter but it’s spring. Los Angeles added on a couple more runs later in the game to give themselves a bit of extra cushion.
The offense meanwhile was helpless against the Halo’s pitching. Facing former Cubs ace Kyle Hendricks, our A’s managed just two hits against him over three innings of work. It didn’t get much better once the Angels’ relief corps came in as the A’s managed just two more hits the rest of the game. Not much to show here as the Athletics’ bats continue to be relatively quiet during spring.
A lackluster day, to be sure. Only four hits from the offense today. Infielder Max Schuemann led off the game with a double but that was the highlight of the day from the bats. He’s battling fellow infielder Darell Hernaiz for a bench spot on the Opening Day roster and helped himself there. Hernaiz meanwhile collected a single in two at-bats today to keep this competition relevant. That battle might go down to the wire.
We continue our Spring Training coverage tomorrow as our A’s take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lefty JP Sears is set to take the mound as the Dodgers counter with their own lefty in rookie Justin Wrobleski. Sho-Time! Let’s strike him out a couple times.
