Brief infield shuffle
The Oakland A’s placed shortstop Elvis Andrus on the paternity list Saturday.
Players may be on the paternity list for up to three days, which means Saturday through Monday in this case for Andrus.
To briefly take his place on the active roster, fellow infielder Vimael Machin was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas. This is Machin’s third stint in Oakland this season.
- Machin, 2021 MLB: 1-for-21, 2 BB, 7 Ks, .156 xwOBA
The lefty batter is hitting well in Triple-A, in the ways you would expect from his contact-and-OBP skill set.
- Machin, 2021 AAA: .304/.385/.502, 116 wRC+, 9 HR, 11.1% BB, 16.7% Ks
The 27-year-old Machin is starting for the A’s on Saturday against the Texas Rangers, batting ninth and playing shortstop — in other words, simply filling in Andrus’ normal spot. Oakland is facing a righty starter Saturday, but they’re scheduled to face lefties on Sunday and Monday.
Congrats to both Andrus and Machin, for very different reasons!
