Another bad day at the ballpark
The A’s got their teeth knocked in for the second day in a row, losing to the Cleveland Guardians 12-5 in front of the home crowd.
Taking the mound today was rotation hopeful Osvaldo Bido. Making his third start of the spring, Bido got absolutely torched right from the get go. Cleveland scored four runs against the right-hander in the first, two in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth before he was finally, mercifully pulled from the game. Spring stats don’t mean much but today was not a good day for Bido at all, and he needs to bounce back next time out if he wants to stay in the competition for that fifth starter’s job.
The bats meanwhile were quiet for the first half of today’s contest. They managed to load the bases in the first but couldn’t cash in, then went a few innings without any real scoring chances.
They wouldn’t stay silent all day. Finally in the fifth they broke through against Cleveland, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the frame with some help from the Guardians. An RBI single by Seth Brown preceded a couple of bases-loaded walks to infielders Luis Urias and Darell Hernaiz. That would be it for the rally but not the Athletics’ scoring.
Cleveland added on more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to give them an even dozen runs on the day.
The Athletics tried rallying back in the eighth and scored a pair of runs to make it a 12-5 game but that would be it as the A’s dropped another spring contest and looked bad doing it.
Another dud of a loss, back-to-back days now. Bido did not look any type of good today as he vies for a rotation job on the Opening Day roster, the offense looks mostly lost again, and the A’s are now 7-5-1 this spring.
The club will be looking to turn their fortunes around tomorrow on Saturday afternoon when they visit the Colorado Rockies. Taking the ball for the A’s will be left-hander Hogan Harris versus a yet to be determined Rockies starter. Time to get that elusive eighth win!
