Gray, we hardly knew you
We continue the Player Review series with a guy that we hardly got to know. Infielder Tristan Grey is today’s player as we continue the Season In Review series.
How Was He Acquired?
The team scooped up Gray late in the season when the Miami Marlins designated him for assignment after appearing in seven games. Worth a flier, right?
What were the expectations?
Considering we hardly knew who Gray was before arriving, expectations were low for him. While he had made his major league debut he spent most of the year in Triple-A before coming up to joining the squad. There’s a lot of power in that bat so maybe the club could get lucky and find the latest diamond in the rough. He also is positionally flexible, playing all over the infield.
2024 Results
Gray slashed a decent enough .245/.318/.459 with 17 long balls in 100 games for Miami’s Triple-A team. He made it to the majors but didn’t last there, going 0-for-7 in a minuscule sample size. Then came the DFA and the waiver claim the Athletics put in.
While the A’s gave him a bit more run during his short stint he looked overmatched. Over eight contests for the Green & Gold Gray went 3-for-24 with 13 strikeouts. That swing-and-miss has always been apart of his game but that’s over half of the AB’s. The club attempted to remove him from the 40-man roster at the end of the year but the Pittsburgh Pirates swooped in and nabbed Gray, ending his short-liver A’s tenure.
2025 Outlook
Gray rejoined the very team that drafted him back in 2017 and now he has a shot to play for them next season. The Pirates have some intriguing players on their roster but are still a ways away from contention, so it makes sense for them to take a look at young potential options. We’ll see if he can pull it all together back in the National League next season.
